Rosberg Happy for Beating Schumacher

Nico Rosberg was only seconds away from scoring a 4th place finish in his very first race with Mercedes GP, in Bahrain. More importantly though, he managed to finish the race ahead of 7-time world champion teammate Michael Schumacher, which secured him some peace of mind ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.

I am happy that I came to the finish line ahead of Michael. This is a super-duel between us that will get even tougher. It is important to beat your teammate because he's driving the same car as you,” said Rosberg in an interview with Bild newspaper, while also pointing out that this was his teammate's first race in more than 3 years.

Additionally, the former Williams driver insisted that the weather conditions and track in Bahrain did not suit the Mercedes W01 last weekend, whereas the Australian GP should witness a more powerful performance from the Mercedes-powered single-seater. Although admitting a win would be out of either his or Schumacher's reach in Melbourne, he insisted a podium is very possible.

The track is better suited to us than Bahrain. We want our first podium. I do not think that we will both be on the podium, but one of us could do it,” added the 24-year old German.

Rosberg and Schumacher ended the season opening round in 5th and 6th respectively, but lacked pace throughout the entire race. While Rosberg managed to keep his 5th position on the grid to the finish line (except for the first few laps, when he overtook Lewis Hamilton for 4th after the start), Schumacher had to settle for 6th place.

Neither of the two drivers managed to overtake anyone in the race.
