Rivian acquired the ABRP app in 2023 and is now launching native integration with Rivian vehicles, being able to pull real-time driving data from your car to calculate charging stops. The phone app has also been updated to the 5.0 version, now offering charge reliability scores and enhanced charger planning based on data provided by Rivian vehicles.
Last year, Rivian bought A Better Route Planner (ABRP), one of the best EV route planning apps out there. The app allows EV owners to plot their route, adding charging stops without worrying about running out of battery. Many hoped that Rivian would use ABRP instead of the native navigation system in the car, which people criticized for providing inaccurate map data. However, ABRP is not a map or navigation app and is best used to plan the best route based on available charging opportunities and the EV's characteristics.
When rumors about the takeover surfaced last year, Rivian announced that it would integrate ABRP with its vehicles' navigation systems and the Rivian mobile app. This ensures that owners will benefit from more accurate route planning options. However, it took a full year before Rivian completed ABRP integration. The good news is that both Rivian owners and users of the ABRP mobile app benefit from this integration.
For Rivian owners, this means that they can access the enhanced route planning tool from the infotainment system inside their cars. The planner now taps into the vehicle's real-time data, including energy consumption, state of charge, and specific configuration, to provide more accurate range estimates. The in-dash route planner also takes into account the weather conditions and traffic to calculate the best route and the required charging stops.
To integrate the R1S or R1T vehicle with ABRP, owners must log into their Rivian account after setting up the vehicle in the ABRP app. This will unlock a wide range of real-time data, including state of charge, power consumption, range, battery capacity, location, and more. The app offers to calibrate the reference consumption of your EV for low, medium, and high speeds to provide the most accurate estimates. It will learn over time from your driving habits and will deliver what its name promises, a better route calculation.
Using ABRP inside your Rivian EV or in the app is free, but subscribing to the Premium plan will unlock more features and better estimates. The plan is $5/month or $50 per year, offering access to live vehicle settings, drive history, live traffic, live weather, and the ability to use more than one vehicle. The same features are available in the mobile Rivian app, allowing you to plan your route before entering the car.
Rivian also offers new features in the ABRP phone app, which has now been updated to version 5.0. These include Charger Reliability Scores available to anyone using the app, regardless of what EV they are driving. The information is extracted from the Rivian Adventure Network, as well as third-party charging networks, including Tesla Supercharger. The ABRP app will now show not just a charger's location on the map but also its status, maximum charging speed, consistency of payment success, and overall charging efficacy. The route planning favors the most reliable chargers by default.
