Petrolheads don't take global warming seriously, and for good reason. There are other, more important factors influencing climate change besides emissions. However, it's probably the first thing that comes to mind when a hail storm destroys your pride and joy.
Completely by accident, we found this story on Instagram of an Audi RS6 owner filming his black beauty while it was bombarded with hail.
We think this is related to the freak weather phenomenon in Germany's Bavaria region last Monday (June 10th). Many witnesses posted videos of large ice rocks shredding through their belongings, be that rooves, gardens or other cars. They the hail came out of the blue, before any rain.
@tom2385 also posted photos of the large stones he collected, which look about 40mm wide, as well as the aftermath. The windshield is cracked all over the place, and the black RS6 will need a full respray.
Although the damage is always superficial, hail can completely write a car off, though it's probably not the case here. Changing the skin of the roof, for example, is a very time-consuming operation that basically involves stripping out the whole interior. Also, cheap insurance doesn't cover natural disasters in some cases. Better read that fine print!
We're on the cusp of a new RS6 being launched, an event that's likely to take place this fall. But even though the fresh model will have a far better interior, we will always remember what this generation did for the performance car world.
It still has one of the best sounding twin-turbo V8 engines, launches like a rocket and makes you think twice about needing a Porsche sports car. Somebody in Germany needs to invent an hail-proof tarp/airbag to protect cars like this.
