It's been a little over one year since Renault introduced the all-new Twingo with a lot of help from Daimler. Despite what some people say, this car handles nothing like a Porsche 911.
In fact, it's not even as fun as the previous generation Twingo that we loved in regular and RS flavors. The problem is that the body is too tall and narrow, while the electronic nannies destroy what's left of your enjoyment. It also doesn't matter where the engine is when it's got the power of a mower.
That's not the Renault way, and the problem is about to be corrected with a hotter version. We've been tracking this little toy for about a year and believe Renault is about to release it. A spotter took two shots of the Twingo with twin exhaust on the N104 near Melun. Sadly, it's still camouflaged, but you can see all the upgrades have been made.
While we know what it looks like, we can't exactly link a name to the product. Early reports indicate that Brabus was going to tune the existing 0.9-liter turbocharged engine to around 110-120 horsepower. If Renault does the same, we don't think it's worthy of the RS badge. Even if they somehow manage to squeeze in the 1.2-liter turbo from the Clio GT into this tiny car, it still doesn't mean it's a proper Renault Sport model.
Why? Because the 205 horsepower Megane GT is pretty impressive with its all-wheel steering system. 0.9, 1.2... frankly, this stuff is ridiculous when you consider that the Twin'Run concept had a mid-mounted V6 engine producing 320 horsepower. If they give us that, Renault can call it Celine Dion.
The increase in power will certainly make the Twingo faster. But adding sports exhaust, bigger wheels and spending over one year on testing will also boost the price considerably. Who's going to pay €18,000 or more on a tiny Renault, especially when it's not a real cult car? We're about to find out when the Twingo RS/GT makes its debut in Paris later this year.
