Powering no less than four Formula One teams this season - Red Bull, Lotus, Williams and Caterham - Renault Sport is close to grabbing the fourth consecutive with the Sebastian Vettel-led Red Bull-Infiniti stable.
With only four races to go, Red Bull-Renault is 148 points ahead of Scuderia Ferrari and, while Newey’s team can’t let the title slip, official celebration has to wait until the season is mathematically sealed. Meanwhile, Renault announced it has claimed a new F1 record for pole positions for engine manufacturers in Japan, where Mark Webber recorded the fastest qualifying time.
The Australian brought the French manufacturer’s 209th pole position since it joined Formula One in 1977, overtaking Ferrari who has 208 front grid “seats” to its name. What’s more, Renault is also the engine supplier with the best pole position rate - 40 percent, compared to Ferrari’s 28% and Mercedes’ 20%.
Renault-powered cars have won 160 races, 11 constructors’ titles and 10 drivers’ championships from 1977 through 2013.
