The Zero-Emission campaign is the living proof that both Renault and Nissan are planning to rely more on electric vehicles but the French carmaker is also planning to reduce the average emission rating of its lineup by launching several upgraded versions of its existing models. For instance, the company recently presented the Clio dCi 85 Renault eco2 that produces only 98 grams of CO2 per kilometer, while fuel consumption goes around 3.7 liters per 100 km (63.5 mpg).
This means that the new Clio can cover a maximum distance of up to 1,486 km with a full tank, Renault said.
Specifically, Renault managed to obtain the emission reduction with the help of several upgrades that didn't affect the final performance figures. For instance, the car features longer gearing across all the transmission ratios and dedicated engine mapping and comes equipped with low-viscosity lubricants to reduce frictional losses in the engine and gearbox.
Additionally, Renault worked on aerodynamics so it extended the flexible lip under the front bumper by 15 mm and introduced new underbody enclosure for the rear axle. Last but not least, the manufacturer reduced the rolling resistance by using Michelin 185x60 R15 low energy consumption tires.
The new Clio version will have the same price tag as the existing model, Renault said in a release, with the first public appearance to happen at the Brussels Motor Show, Belgium, on January 13. The car will go on sale in March 2010 in both three- and five-door configurations, but order books will open in France on February 9.
