With automakers thinking about the EV cooldown – even Rimac's CEO admits that ICEs are cooler as he hasn't found buyers for the 150 Nevera hypercars it plans to build – Tesla is currently with the back against a wall.
Legacy carmakers have an interesting advantage in the new 'cold EV war' climate – they can easily go back to being ICE gurus with help from PHEVs and hybrids, while not long ago, they were seen as the losing side. As for Tesla, they are doing their best to keep the momentum flowing with the all-new Cybertruck and the refreshed Tesla Model 3, among other stuff.
Fresh off the heels of the Model 3 Performance introduction, now everyone is thinking about what comes next. Well, we know that social media is still preoccupied with the 'frunk versus carrot' game as they switched their attention from the Cybertruck to Rivian, but the rumor mill doesn't play trivia(lly) like that. Instead, the imaginative realm of digital car content creators still wants to see what comes next.
Well, according to this virtual artist, better known as Theottle on social media, it's not hard to imagine – and he has recently resorted to CGI slicing and dicing Tesla's Model 3 'Highland' to give its DNA to Model Y's own refresh. This is the best-selling EV in the world – possibly the most popular overall if we split Toyota's hair about the Corolla and Corolla Cross not being part of the same series – so things are naturally serious.
As it turns out, at least if we are to believe the pixel master's latest behind-the-scenes making-of video feature embedded below, it won't be hard for Tesla to bestow the same visual upgrades from Model 3 'Highland' to the refreshed Model Y crossover SUV. Of course, since he's an expert, the CGI guru knows how to make it look easy. The cool thing is that all the changes seem pretty much straightforward, and nothing feels forced.
Hopefully, Tesla will soon update the Model Y with the same changes offered on the Model 3, especially the upgrades regarding comfort and handling. Plus, of course, we are all waiting for the Model 3 Performance goodies to trickle on the Model Y Performance and possibly make it the most enticing proposition on the market. After all, right now, the high-performance sedan is one of the most absurdly great EVs on the market thanks to its inclusion in the federal tax credit program, right?
Tesla says that with the $7,500 bonus and its estimated 5-year gas savings of $5,000, the Tesla Model 3 Performance price can go down from its MSRP of $53,990 to an expense of $41,490. Meanwhile, the current Model Y Performance is still a bit cheaper, starting at $51,490, and with the tax credit plus gas savings of $6k, it could go down to as low as $37,990.
