The Japanese automaker Toyota, at least in America, has preoccupied itself with the rising fortunes of the mid-size category – and everyone and their mother now think it's time they start focusing on the compact roster too.
Let's think about what Toyota has done over the past few months in the United States. They came out with the all-new, first-ever Grand Highlander, a family-oriented mid-size crossover SUV twinned with the Lexus TX and built on location in America. They also introduced the N400, the fourth generation of the ultra-best-selling Tacoma mid-size pickup truck, complete with the new Trailhunter grade and a 326-hp i-Force Max hybrid powertrain alongside the inline-four turbo 2.4-liter i-Force.
Then they dialed up the proceeds a notch and brought back the 2024 Land Cruiser in a mid-size form (twinned with the 2024 Lexus GX) instead of reviving the slow-selling full-size model. That wasn't all, though – they are also fresh with the 2025 Camry, the best-selling mid-size sedan, with a new Crown Signia near-premium mid-size crossover SUV, and will soon launch the definitive mid-size off-road SUV three-row all-rounder, the N380 sixth generation 4Runner!
So, anyone thinking that's a lot of mid-sizers, the rumor mill, and also the imaginative realm of digital car content creators will reply: "Our thoughts exactly." As such, it is no wonder that the reports and the parallel universes of vehicular CGI now focus on what comes next from the lower echelon – the compact roster. Of course, the prime suspect is the all-new next-gen RAV4 best-selling crossover SUV.
However, Vince Burlapp (aka vburlapp on social media or burlappcar.com) is a prolific virtual artist who loves to dream of all the latest models across the wide-ranging automotive realm and think outside the box. Or, rather, he's already proposed no less than eight 2025 or 2026 RAV4 interpretations, and now he's moving on to the slightly boring Corolla Cross compact crossover SUV.
Offered in America as the successor of the smaller C-HR as an answer to Honda's HR-V, this CUV has been around for a little while – it's in production since 2020 and offered in North America starting with the 2022 model year – but to many, it feels like more. That's probably the fault of the rather boring design. As such, this pixel master strives to innovate, ignores the ultra-conservative Corolla Cross refresh Toyota launched in Thailand in February, and carves a newer, bolder styling for the little CUV.
Unfortunately, there's just one point of view – the classic front three-quarters, but we can see the CGI expert actually likes the Thai version of the Corolla Cross with its new and distinctive radiator grille. He adapts that idea, though, on a completely new body with an aggressive front fascia, muscly fender flares, and a racked rooftop. However, This hypothetical design project looks decidedly more compact than the current Corolla Cross and has a less practical boot cutout. So, do we like it or not?
