The Ram 1500 will be the first modern half-ton pickup to offer a diesel engine, after Chrysler announced the availability of a 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel unit.
As you might have guessed, we're talking about the same 240 horsepower (420 lb-ft of torque) turbo diesel that's supposed to go into the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The engine is set to achieve 30 miles per gallon on the highway and can tow up to 7,400 lbs.
According to USA Today, Chrysler decided to introduce a diesel engine for the 1500 after "customers have been emphatically craving for it", said Ram CEO Fred Diaz.
Chrysler is hoping that the new EcoDiesel Ram 1500 will improve annual sales with about 10,000 units, despite the fact that the option will be more expensive than the Hemi premium package.
It's too early to make any assumptions, but it will be interesting to see if Ram's new option will stir any response from pickup segment rivals Ford, Chevrolet or GMC.
