Race at the Base, Home of 250 Historic Race Cars

A big event for automotive enthusiasts and lover of historic racing cars is being prepared for September 25, at the Naval Air Station North Island. Nicknamed Race at the Base, the event is the 13th embodiment of the gathering which has become to be known as Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival.

According to the organizers, the show will be attended by no less than 250 historic race cars, together with some racing legends. All will be gathering at the location to honor the men and women of the military.

Just to give us a taste of what the show will be all about, the organizers announced the presence of Scooter Patrick (holder of the 1968 American Road Race of Champions National Championship title) behind the wheel of a 1958 Porsche 356A Speedster, Greg Johnson and his 1955 Austin Healey 100S and Indy car racing icons Al Unser, Bobby Unser, Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney and Michael Andretti.

Being an event intended to celebrate the Shelby American cars in general and the Cobra in particular, the Race at the Base will be packed with such amazing vehicles. The main attractions of the event will remain however the several racing categories prepared for this year:
  • 1952 – 1959 Sports and Production cars – Drum Brake
  • 1953 – 1966 Production cars under 2000cc
  • 1962 – 1972 Sports Racing and Formula Cars under 2000cc
  • 1969 – 1980 Sports Racing and Formula Cars under 2000cc
  • 1959 – 1966 Production cars – Disc Brake
  • 1965 – 1988 FIA Manufacturer Championship Cars
  • 1962 – 1966 Productions cars over 2500cc
  • 1966-1972 Historic Trans-AM
  • Historic NASCAR
