As nearly every hatchback in Europe is now available with a tiny turbocharged engine, the all-new 2021 Audi RS3 Sportback seems about as subtle as a fur coat at a Greenpeace Rally. The hyper hatchback was spied today for the first time, and you can bet your gas money it has something to rival the AMG A45 S.
While the A45 is seen today as the ultimate fast hatchback, it was actually BMW and Audi who got us where we are today, adding progressively larger and more powerful engines to the A3 and 1 Series.
Today, you can still buy a 2.5-liter engine in a Mazda3 or have more than 400 horsepower thanks to the AMG A45, but there's nothing quite like the RS3. This new model predictably takes the design of the Mk4 A3 hatchback to the next level, not only with the body kit, but also tiny details.
It's immediately obvious that the RS3 sits much lower on wider tires. Its front end has been completely designed to the point where it looks almost identical to that of the 2020 RS6. The extra-wide grille and chin spoiler at the front are mirrored in the diffuser tail with twin oval exhausts at the other end.
The power will still come from a 2.5-liter engine, even though most other Audi models are being downsized. And while mild-hybrid technology might need to be installed, you can also expect more power. Rumor has it that the RS3 will borrow the water injection idea from the BMW M4 GTS, allowing it to comfortably deliver 420 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque.
This will enable the pocket rocket to go from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in about 4 seconds. As before, AWD and a 7-speed S tronic auto should shuffle the power around. As for the interior, this will look a bit like the Q3, so without the tablets of the Golf or Leon.
