On their way out in Europe over new cybersecurity laws that come into effect in July 2024, the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman have been recalled in the United States for a safety concern. Specifically, the safety clip on the PDK transmission shift cable may not have been installed properly.
This condition prevents the gearbox from locking in the park position, therefore increasing the risk of a rollaway. A meager 14 units of the 718 series are potentially affected, with said vehicles produced for the 2024 model year  between July 6, 2023 and March 21, 2024. Porsche Cars North America notes that the safety clip may not have been fitted correctly by workers during a rework process at the factory. Which factory isn't clear, for the recall documentation fails to state whether said vehicles were assembled in Zuffenhausen or Osnabruck.

Overflow production of the 718 kicked off at Volkswagen's assembly plant in Osnabruck in 2023. The Zuffenhausen site in Stuttgart, meanwhile, gears up for the all-electric successor to the 718. At press time, Zuffenhausen produces the 718 in addition to the 911 and zero-emission Taycan.

Turning our attention back to the recall, Porsche Cars North America will instruct dealers to perform a pull test on the locking shift cable. In case of damage, retailers are required to replace the shift cable. Vehicles that have been reworked will be checked on a roller to ensure that the park position of the seven-speed PDK double-clutcher really means park.

The part number for said cable is 982713266B, and the supplier is Slovakia-based Kuster. According to Porsche, two isolated cases of rollaway were reported at the end of April 2024. This prompted the German automaker to investigate said issue, which is believed to affect only 5% of the suspect population.

In other words, the best-case scenario would be a single car instead of the grand total of 14 for the US market. While it's not clear which versions of the Boxster and Cayman are recalled, Porsche did provide a list of vehicle identification numbers.

Using a VIN decoder, it appears that Porsche has recalled four- and six-cylinder versions of the 718 series. Owner notification letters will be mailed on or about June 12, 2024. The most affordable 718 in production today for the United States of America is the 2.0-liter Cayman, which starts at $68,300 before destination charge and optional extras.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Cayman GT4 RS and Spyder RS are $160,700 from the outset. Both feature the 4.0-liter naturally aspirated screamer of a six-cylinder boxer we usually associate with the 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 RS, but for these applications, Porsche had to detune it.

Instead of the Neunelfer's 502 and 518 horsepower, the Cayman GT4 RS and Spyder RS "make do" with 493 ponies. Both mid-engine sports cars are much obliged to hit 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) in a swift 3.2 seconds, while maximum speed favors the hard-topped model (196 mph/315 kph versus 191 mph/307 kph for the Spyder RS).
