Porsche’s press centers from across the world will resonate to a single word today, as the official name for the Cajun, a junior SUV to slot beneath the Cayenne in its range, has been announced. Stuttgart has named the vehicle “Macan”, which supposedly means tiger in Indonesian. This name was chosen as it best conveys the SUV’s main traits “power, fascination and dynamics”.
“The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of a SUV and is a genuine Porsche”, said Bernhard Maier, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG. “The name of a new Porsche has to fit with the brand, sound good in very many languages and dialects and evoke positive associations.”
While some might say this vehicle moves further away from Porsche’s sportscar roots, let’s not forget how much the Cayenne has boosted the company’s sales in recent years. And the Macan will also be built in Leipzig starting next year.
Porsche expect a lot from the new model, since they’ve invested €500 million in order to expand their facilities there, and are going to increase the workforce by 1,000 people.
“Word names at Porsche have a concrete connection with the corresponding model and its characteristics: the name Boxster describes the combination of boxer engine and roadster, Cayenne stands for sharpness, the Cayman is snappy and agile and a Panamera is more than a Gran Tourismo, capable also of winning the Carrera Panamericana long-distance race,” Porsche’s press release adds.
