Speaking to Autocar India at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, Detlev von Platen reiterated the Neunelfer is the Porsche that sets the trend for the rest of the lineup as far as design is concerned. We’re having second thoughts in this regard, more so if you remember the full-width LED taillights are inspired from the Cayenne and Panamera.
But then again, that type of taillight design can trace its roots back to the 993, 964, and even the 930. Which model inspired which, it would be nonsensical to be splitting hairs. “Taking the 911 and making an SUV out of it? Taking it higher? That could be a good idea,” added Platen.
Described as “very niche,” the 911 SUV would take Porsche to another level as far as sales are concerned. Even Ferrari is doing it with the Purosangue, giving Porsche the perfect excuse to follow in their footsteps. On the other hand, don’t forget the 959 Paris Dakar rally car and the 911 Safari would serve as indirect predecessors to the all-new model.
Porsche isn’t afraid of diluting the brand with such models considering the existence of the Cayenne, Panamera, and Mission E Cross Turismo that previews the Taycan shooting brake. The 911 is also available with all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering, two features that are indispensable to the super-SUV genre Lamborghini created by the Urus.
Speaking of Lamborghini, hearsay suggests the Raging Bull of Sant’Agata Bolognese is also thinking about rolling out the Huracan Safari along with the mid-cycle refresh of the V10-powered supercar. As ludicrous as this sounds, don’t forget the Italian automaker has experience in this domain, starting with the LM002 from the 1980s.
There are exceptional differences between the Rambo Lambo and Huracan Safari, starting with the location of the engine. But knowing Lamborghini, the maddest supercar manufacturer of them all could surprise us once again.
