It's summer again; temperatures are rising, nature beckons, and wanderlust whispers sweet nothings into your ears, so it's the perfect time to embark on memorable outdoor adventures. When it comes to road trips, beach excursions, and cross-country journeys, nothing beats the comfort and convenience of a well-designed modern camper van.
Due to their compact size, easy maneuverability, and ability to contain plenty of amenities in a deceivingly small package, camper vans are a great choice for weekend warriors and vanlifers alike. In this piece, I'm checking out a remarkable custom van conversion that would be a perfect choice for anyone dreaming of exciting adventures this summer.

Dubbed "Planned Spontaneity," this custom camper van boasts a carefully arranged interior for maximum comfort on the road and is designed to enable an off-grid lifestyle on a moment's notice, reminding us that planning ahead is the key to living with more spontaneity.

It is based on a 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 170" AWD and has been expertly converted into a mobile base camp by Freedom Vans. Founded by a husband and wife team, the Bellingham, Washington-based van outfitter works closely with its clients to give them a reliable foundation for their adventures and strives to provide excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail with each new build.

Planned Spontaneity was built with recreation and outdoor exploration in mind, so it seamlessly merges the capability to conquer rugged terrains with the familiarity of home comforts. Freedom Vans equipped the Sprinter with a series of features that enable the owner to venture into off-the-beaten-path destinations, such as Van Compass "Stage 4.3" front and rear adjustable Falcon shocks and rear three-leaf mini spring pack for superior performance on any terrain, a Hellwig heavy-duty sway bar to improve driver handling, Black Rhino Sequoia 17″ wheels with Maxxis Razr all-terrain tires, a DEF tank skid plate with bull bar, and Backwoods front bumper with ABA sensor housing. Vinyl wrap was also installed on the rocker panels.

A series of additions on the outside give away the vehicle's camping DNA, including the custom roof rack with a fishing pole holder, the Fiamma mechanical awning, the solar panels on the roof, and the Owl Vans tire carrier/ladder combo attached to the rear door.

While the exterior looks rugged and ready to tackle any adventure, the interior is soft and inviting, perfect for relaxing after a day of hiking, biking, skiing, or strolling down the beach. True to its nickname, the layout is ingeniously thought-out with everything you need for a quick load and go, allowing owners to embark on spontaneous adventures.

The customer opted for an open-plan layout with no separation between the driver's cab and the actual living space, but a privacy curtain on the snap track is included to create an intimate space when needed. The living space is minimalist but exudes elegance due to the choice of materials and the neutral color palette of white and dark gray.

In terms of amenities, Planned Spontaneity includes a rear bedroom space, a central kitchenette, a modular wet room, and a front lounge with a bench seat that converts into a second bed if needed. All these features enhance the van's versatility while also allowing for a spacious open floor plan.

The front bench seat is strategically placed on the driver's side to face the sliding door and allow adventurers to enjoy the surrounding views whenever they sit down. This area has many different functions, as it can be used as a lounge area, a dining area with a table with Black Lagun mounts, a workspace for digital nomads, or a double bed for guests with pull-out sections.

Despite its compactness, the kitchen is very well-configured to offer maximum functionality. It features Corian countertops with a fold-down extension, Azula Hex tile backsplash, and a fold-down table attached to the back of the kitchen block for outdoor use. A sink fed by a 36-gallon fresh water tank mounted in the garage space, a microwave, and a Vitrifrigo fridge/freezer ensure you can quickly put together healthy on-the-go meals. The builders also installed a three-stage drinking water system with a water filter faucet mounted next to the sink.

The modular wet room is an ingenious feature that comprises a cabinet with flip-up countertop and swing open doors, a two-piece shower pan with a sliding slated wood shower mat, and a shower head. It also houses a Nature's head composting toilet.

The sleeping space at the rear of the van is made up of a fixed loft-style bed platform with plenty of garage space underneath and a 6″ queen-size mattress, which promises restful nights. Unlike other camper van conversions that have overhead storage cabinets in this area, Freedom Vans found a way to include an almost full-wall cabinet for the owner's storage needs.

For larger items that don't fit inside the van, the spacious garage is fitted with a pull-out gear tray mounted on 500-pound strength drawer slides. A couple of shelves and snap-on shoe storage pockets on the rear doors help keep this area well organized.

Whether exploring remote off-grid locations or setting up camp near your hometown, this motorhome is ready for any adventure. Other noteworthy features of the Planned Spontaneity camper van are a floor-mount air filter that brings in cool, filtered air front underneath the van, a Webasto diesel heater, an AC unit, two 60-cell solar panels, a 3000-watt pure sine AIMS inverter, and a We Boost LTE Overlander booster for better cell signal on overlanding or off-roading trips.
