Italian journalists, united under the L'Unione Italiana Giornalisti dell'Automobile organization (UIGA), have named the Peugeot 3008 Auto Europa 2010. The French crossover managed to beat competitors like Citroen C3 Picasso, BMW Z4, Opel Insignia and Volkswagen Polo to get the award from the over 200 auto journalists.
"The award is an acknowledgment of a car (the first crossover to receive this award) which expresses the change in style and taste of the public," Pierluigi Bonora, UIGA president said in a release.
"It's a model which has already been well received – as the 6,000 units sold in this brief time prove, especially in this difficult climate. We are confident that we can count on it to consolidate its own position on the market," Patrizia Sala, Peugeot Italia communications manager added.
The 3008, a compact crossover manufactured at the Sochaux facility, comes equipped with a choice of 6 engines, with outputs ranging from 110 to 163 bhp. According to Peugeot, the car combines "driving pleasure and higher vehicle height."
It features several advanced technologies, including Heads Up Display, Distance Alert, automatic electric parking brake, hill alert and telematic systems with satellite navigation. The car is being offered with a starting price of 18,500 euros.
Peugeot entered the Italian contest for the second time this year, probably in preparation for the big exam later this year: the 2010 European Car of the Year Awards, where the 3008 is also a contestant. In 2007, Peugeot managed to snatch the Auto Europa award for the 207 model.
