Patriotism is a tough word to explain. Manifestations include love and devotion to one’s homeland and traditions, but on the other hand, patriotism is closely linked with the double-edged sword known as nationalism. On this occasion, we’re dealing with a C8 Corvette and his owner's patriotic display.
The high-wing Z51 of David Savage started out with a black piece of plastic for the LT2 small-block V8 that was replaced by a red cover after delivery. The owner then had the idea to get a custom paint job for his original cover, and the theme is centered around the good ol’ Red, White, and Blue and the ‘Vette logo.
On its own, the engine cover wouldn’t look out of place as a replacement shield for Captain America thanks to 10 beautiful five-pointed stars. The blue running down the center is complemented by white, red, and white again on the edges of the cover. When asked if he did the painting himself, David replied to a Facebook user to “just find an airbrusher person that does cars and motorcycles.”
The question is, does it make sense do hire someone instead of getting a painted cover from Chevrolet? The mid-engine sports car can be had with Edge Red or Sterling Silver for the engine cover if you're prepared to pony up $495, yet there are more affordable alternatives that don’t require too much effort.
As we reported in a previous story about C8 Corvette DIY mods, an owner has simply painted the engine cover with two coats of primer, three coats of red, and that was that. LED lighting for the engine compartment is also doable with nothing more than AA-powered light bars and double-sided adhesive tape.
David also has a matching helmet but you won’t see him wearing it on the road. It’s used for tracking and autocross, and jokingly, David replied to a Facebook user that “sometimes my girlfriend has me put it on in the bedroom.”
