I am officially confused. Some might say that since I write about BMWs on a daily basis and am supposed to know absolutely everything about them and justify every move the Germans make to the wide audience, I should be able to explain the 4 Series Gran Coupe model. I can’t.
The whole thing is obviously a marketing move. Why would you take a 3 Series Sedan, take off two doors, turning it into the 4 Series Coupe and then give it those two doors back to call it the Gran Coupe? It doesn’t really make sense. I mean it does, but only in a .... limited way...
Now things are even blurrier that we caught some patent images of the upcoming model on the internet. We get the whole 4-door coupe thing (I actually love the 6 Series Gran Coupe) but by the looks of the 4 Series GC, the difference is just too small in this case to set it apart from the 3 Series Sedan in a categoric way.
Compared to the ordinary coupe, the Gran Coupe will mostly likely have a longer wheelbase to accommodate the rear passengers better and a lower center of gravity than the Sedan 3er but that’s about it.
From the looks of it, it won’t be sporting a tailgate at the back, as its main rival (the A5 Sportback) does, but it will be kept within the tradition started by the 6 Series Gran Coupe and have a good old boot lid round the back.
As for the engines, expect it to be basically the same as on the 2-door Coupe line-up, with a couple of various output 2-liter diesel and petrol units as well as some 3-liter, higher-spec versions too.
