Respecting tradition, the 2024 Ultimate Overland vehicle build is powered by GMC with a mid-size Canyon AT4X adventurer mid-size pickup truck and officially built by Overland Expo West for the May 17-19 event in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Established in 2009, Overland Expo is one of the best-known event series for the increasingly popular "do-it-yourself adventure travel enthusiasts." It gathers providers of adventure travel equipment, camping gear, bikes, vehicles, and services by the hundreds at every event, which even has its own Overland Film Festival. Starting a few years ago (2021), they have also grown into the habit of preparing an official custom vehicle (a pair, actually, a 4x4 and a motorcycle) – and GMC is no stranger to such adventures.

In 2022, there was a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X (2020 was the year of the Toyota 4Runner, and last year they did a Lexus LX 600) that morphed into a cool overland truck adventurer, and now the event is paying tribute to that build with its mid-size 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X as the 2024 Ultimate Overland vehicle build. Naturally, with the series of events kicking off with Overland Expo West, the custom truck will be present there and at all subsequent events organized by Emerald.

It will be at Fort Tuthill County Park in Flagstaff, Arizona, with the "latest and greatest adventure gear to create a vision of the ultimate overland vehicle." Those include the Peak Suspension goodies, the OEM AEV Edition fender flares to fit 35-inch BFGoodrich AT tires, 17-inch Torque Wheels, the 589 Fabrication Mini-Fighter front bumper with space for an integrated front skid plate and mounts for the four Vision X CG2 lights, as well as a 9,500-lbs ComeUp Winch, original AEV rear bumper, snorkel kit, a stainless-steel MagnaFlow Overland Series exhaust, AEV IFS, transfer case, fuel tank, and rear differential skid plates.

Wait, wait, wait – these are just the technical additions on top of the specific GMC AT4X equipment! "For storage, comfort, and recovery," the truck has an even longer list of gear, including stuff like a Leitner Designs bed rack with an Alu-Cab rooftop tent with Shadow Awn 270 and Shower Cube to make sure you're in good health and spirit at the end of the day. There are also Aeronaut Outdoor bedding and camp blankets, a Decked storage system, a Zoleo satellite communicator, Midland Radio MXT575 and Gain Ghost antenna, as well as a Blackstone grill plus Project X fridge in addition to the Jetboil Flash cooking system and Genesis Basecamp system.

Last but not least, power in the camp for this one-off is provided off-grid by a Redarc 200W solar panel and the latest Manager Alpha 100 for charging, the Battle Born Batteries 100Ah 12-Volt heated LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Battery for energy storage, and a Bluetti Power Inc AC240 power station, among others. As for moving around, this build relies on the 2.7-liter turbo HO engine with 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque for a towing capacity of 5,500 lbs.
