Earlier today, we told you that General Motors, just like other carmakers selling cars in China, is trying to take advantage of the local boom by building cars in the country and selling them elsewhere. Well, Opel, part of the General Motors empire, is also included in the Americans' expansion plan, so the company will launch the new Antara in China this year.
According to a report by China Car Times, the car will most likely go on sale there in May 2011 and will be powered by a 2.4-liter engine. In Europe, the 2.4-liter engine has been improved with 30 extra horsepower, being mated to a manual or an automatic six-speed transmission.
Although nobody from within Opel or General Motors has confirmed this, Antara could also be offered with other engine options coming from the Old Continent. In Europe for example, the model has been enhanced with the addition of a new 2.2l CDTI Turbo diesel, which generates either 163 hp or 184 hp. The less powerful engine is available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive and can be paired to either a manual or an automatic six speed transmission. The more powerful engine comes with the same choice of transmissions and is equipped with all-wheel drive.
An interesting thing however is that the Antara will compete against the Captiva in China, both being part of General Motors' global lineup of vehicles. Not only that the two models would compete one against the other but, as the aforementioned source notes, this Chevrolet is going to be pretty cheaper, so why the decision to bring Antara in China after all?
