If you've got to buy one car that takes care of all your family needs, why not get a crossover. The boot space of an MPV is combined with the tough look of a serious offroader in a vehicle which, let's face it, only has to cope with a bumpy driveway or the occasional curb.
Many European families have seen the appeal of small B-segment crossovers and their popularity has grown exponentially. Opel's Mokka is one of the segment best sellers, a fact which the latest sales numbers perfectly illustrate.
Opel's counter that keeps track of Mokka sales has just racked up 200,000 units and there's no sign of demand slowing down. February 2014 saw the best order intake ever and since production has moved to Spain they can actually keep up with demand.
Right now, the Mokka has an 11.3 share of its segment in Europe, making it the third best selling model. In Germany, the Mokka tops the SUV segment with 12 per cent market share in the first two months of 2014, which might or might not have something to do with Claudia Schiffer recently becoming an "ambassador" for the car.
Launched at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6th, 2012, the Mokka arrived before rivals like the Renault Captur or the Peugeot 2008. It's been co-developed by engineers in Europe and Asia, who based a total off three crossovers on the same chassis. In America, it's known as the Encore, being Buick's smallest car. Chevrolet also gets its own slightly cheaper model called the Trax, which will be featured in the upcoming blockbuster Transformers 4.
“We are delighted with the Mokka’s sales performance,” said Tim Tozer, Vauxhall’s Chairman and Managing Director. “The Mokka was one of the first compact SUV’s to be launched and it has been very popular with our customers ever since.”
