Also known as the Vauxhall Adam Rocks Air in the United Kingdom where it holds a starting price of £14,695 OTR, the new A-segment city car with an electric folding canvas roof and crossover exterior detailing is now available to order, with first European deliveries (U.K. included) expected in September.
If you think hard about it, the Adam Rocks debuts a new niche. Of course, you have the Fiat 500C and the Citroen DS3 Cabrio, but those two don't have the rugged off-road bits and bobs that give the Opel Adam Rocks its specific looks. This three-door, 3.75-meter long urban pocket-crossover is available with an all-new powerplant – an Euro 6 1-liter three-cylinder EcoTec turbo engine that benefits from direct injection. Figures? 90 or 115 ponies, 170 Nm of torque, 4.5 or 5.1 liters of gasoline used per 100 kilometers on the combined cycle, a new six-speed manual gearbox dubbed M1X, 180 or 196 km/h top speed and 0 to 100 km/h in 11.9 or 9.9 seconds, respectively, as well as Start/Stop offered as standard.
The engine lineup also includes a 70 hp 1.2-liter and a 100 hp 1.4-liter four-cylinder, both mated to a five-speed stick shift. “Customers will be thrilled with the Rocks combination of open-air driving fun, state-of-the-art connectivity and a lively new engine,” says Peter Christian Küspert, Opel board member for sales. “Rocks also shares the Adam family’s huge personalization potential, which means almost every example of this urban crossover will be unique." On the outside, anthracite-colored body cladding enhances the friendly Adam with a tough, muscular persona. Silver skid plates front and rear, together with a bold chrome exhaust complete the new model's exterior design highlights.
As for the inside, dedicated new colors, door trim options and decor elements are available for Opel’s miniature urban trailblazer. But the party piece is most definitely the Swing Top electric canvas roof. It folds back neatly on to the C-pillars in just 5 seconds and can be opened or closed while the car is moving at speeds up to 140 km/h. The roof module offers good noise insulation inside the cabin and the robust three-layer fabric has a neoprene center sandwich that also improves the roof's durability.
What really matters on the inside from our point of view is the IntelliLink media system, allowing seamless integration of Android and Apple iOS smartphones. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system includes Siri Eyes Free voice control, a photo gallery viewer and even a video player. Pretty neat system, right?
