After we've talked about the Ferrari FXX K and its first scale model, we gave you the reason for which Maranello should build an open-top FXX K and now we're back on the topic to show you what happens when the LaFerrari's racing nonidentical twin is allowed to have its way with a racetrack.
One of the many, many things that sets the FXX K apart from the LaFerrari is the way in which the 6,262 cc V12 was tweaked. While on the street car the naturally aspirated toy delivers 800 hp, this gains 60 prancing horses for the motorsport special.
It all starts with the intake manifold, which has been polished in an over-passionate way, while the valve train now features mechanical rather than hydraulic tappets (the camshafts are new too). Moreover, the exhaust silcencers have been removed and while we imagined Maranello engineers giggling as they were discussing the move, the time has now come to listen to the result of all that work.
The footage below was captured last week, when the Ferrari FXX K made its debut on the Yas Marina F1 circuit and you can easily notice how the aural side of the FXX K's lapping action dominates the entire scene.
In fact, the engineers present at the track who had their helmets on appear very happy about the decision and even seem to give these a better fit as the FXX K enters the pit lane.
What we see here was a demonstration, so don't expect to notice anything special in terms of the massive downforce changes the FXX K sports - we'll remind you that, depending on the configuration, the racer can deliver up to 50 percent extra downforce compared to the LaFerrari. For instance, that means 220 lbs (540 kg) at 124 mph (200 km/h).
The LaFerrari's electric motor has gone from 163 to 190 hp in the motorsport-ization process and yet that V12 is never going to allow the extra electron buzz to reach our ears. Unless the FXX K also comes with an all-electric mode like the LaFerrari - don't ask Ferrari about this though, they won't even admit the LaFerrari offers that.
