The Nissan Rogue has always had a smaller brother, the Qashqai, but due to its parents being separated, the two were forced to live on different sides of the ocean. That's about to change, as the Qashqai is reportedly going to make its way into US dealerships.
The current generations of these crossovers are based on the same platform and share many components. However, the Qashqai is almost a foot shorter and doesn't come with a third row of seats. We'd argue that it's also a more handsome little car, but that's entirely subjective.
According to a report from Automotive News, the Qashqai will be sold in America quite soon and will replace the Rogue Select, which is essentially just the previous generation model that's being kept in production. That suggests the Qashqai will carry a starting price in the neighborhood of $20,000.
Nissan will rely on better mpg numbers to help sell the Qashqai. No engines have been confirmed yet, but the two major options available are a 2-liter naturally aspirated unit or the 1.6 turbo used by the Juke. Considering the rival 2016 Scion iM hatchback (also costs $20,000) brings only 137 hp to the table, we're quite happy with those two options.
The same source states that a Rogue Hybrid will enter the lineup next year. This is, of course, linked to the story about Rogue models being imported from Japan starting with the spring of 2016. An X-Trail Hybrid model is already sold there from about $27,000. It comes with a 2-liter engine making 146 hp on its own, parallel hybrid drive that uses a 41 hp electric motor and gets about 48 mpg.
