Nissan is an important name on the performance vehicle market, with the company currently offering the pure 370Z and the supercar game-changer GT-R. The Japanese company is planing to strengthen its position in the “go-fast” vehicles segment in the future, as autocar reports.
The first performance car development coming from Nissan is a facelift for the GT-R, which should hit the market later this year.
But this falls in the short-term plans category. As for the mid and long-term plans, Nissan’s Chief Operating Officer, Toshiyuki Shiga told the aforementioned source that the automotive producer plans to keep producing sports cars, so the GT-R nameplate will be included in the Nissan’s future range.
“The GT-R is part of Nissan’s heritage. In fact, since Nissan started as a car company, it has been offering driving pleasure through sports cars. I can’t commit to any new products but, as far as we know, we are keeping this brand, these technologies, and trying to offer sporty cars. I am also thinking of electric vehicles as sporty cars,” the executive told autocar.
This comes to offer a relief to GT-R and performance car enthusiasts from all over the world, as the Internet had been filled with multiple rumors indicating that the GT-R might be discontinued due to the fact that Nissan is aiming to cut the average CO2 emissions of its range.
The executive added that Nissan will make steps on the eco pathway, explaining that one of the possibilities considered to cut emissions is the production of an all-electric sports car.
