The Qashqai has been Nissan's best selling vehicle in Europe since its launch, helping the company keep its head above water during the worst slowdown in the local car market ever seen. However, now that competition from other companies is heating up in the crossover segment, Nissan wants to capitalize on its reputation and create a coupe version of the car.
"We are observing the moves of other automakers such as Audi, Honda and Volvo. We will not stand watching," Marco Fioravanti, Nissan Europe's general manager, said during a press event in Spain.
This sports activity coupe is under consideration with the company's top executives. It would be inspired by the likes of the Range Rover Evoque and offer a keener driving experience. Considering the Qashqai has dropped independent rear suspension in order to become cheaper, we think this tall family vehicle has a long way to go before we'll ever call it "sporty".
But at least one part of the sports coupe equation is being sorted out. Power, which the crossover obviously doesn't have enough of, will be improved upon when the NISMO version of the car comes out. Rumors suggest this would have the same 215 hp as the Juke NISMO RS.
