Not long now, and the 2026 Porsche 718 Boxster will celebrate three decades since it was introduced in 1996 as the more affordable mid-engine two-seater sports car option compared to the rear-engined 911 series.
The Boxster saga is quite compelling, although it has only had a short period of time to develop. The boxer engine model received a sibling – the Cayman coupe – when the second generation was introduced in late 2005, and after a rather uneventful and possibly quite dull third generation, the Porsche 982, its fourth iteration, arrived with a new name and new engine series.

The Porsche Boxster and Cayman got the 718 numeral added as a nod to the Porsche 718 model that won the Targa Florio race in 1959 and 1960, while under the hood, there was an all-new turbocharged flat-four engine. Don't worry, the flat-six wasn't retired – the GTS 4.0 model was offered on both 718 models with the 4.0-liter rocking 400 ps or 394 horsepower.

In production since 2016, the current 718 iterations are fast approaching the mighty threshold of ten years in the making, but there's a big chance the anniversary won't take place – the 2025 or 2026 Porsche 718 Boxter was caught in prototype form as it left cold weather testing in the northern regions and returned to its natural habitat at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

That's all fine and dandy, but not everyone might be happy because the testing procedures are focused on the all-electric version because just like the second-generation Macan, the new Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman will be completely silent and powered by electrons. Naturally, the rumor mill and the imaginative realm of digital car content creators are right there beside them to try and unofficially reveal the goodies way ahead of time.

More precisely, Avarvarii Automotive Artworks (aka avarvarii on social media) has taken a good, extended look at Porsche's plans for the 718 Boxster open-top and then decided he knows the next EV model from Stuttgart enough to give us a fresh rendering with a 90% degree of accuracy. According to the pixel master, the latest secrets revealed by Porsche's prototypes include the "production headlamps with a multi-LED graphic, similar to the new Taycan and Macan, and the addition of slim horizontal rear light."

The CGI expert is not so sure an air intake is needed on the sides anymore, and maybe the front air inlets won't be so obviously styled after the refreshed Porsche 911 Hybrid, but other than that, the author believes "this should be it." According to the rumor mill, the new and sporty EV will make use of the new SSP Sport architecture, which allows for both RWD and AWD applications with minimal impact on weight.

As a reminder, Porsche is investing 200 million euros to introduce massive updates to its Zuffenhausen facility specifically for electric vehicle production. However, it will keep offering ICE-powered models during the transition period to an all-EV lifestyle. Also, they have an interesting investment in Rimac – they own 45% while Rimac has 55% of Bugatti Rimac, and Porsche has direct control over 24% of Rimac, allowing them to advance battery and motor technology together and reap the benefits in the new Macan Electric and the upcoming 718 Boxster and Cayman. So, what do you think? Will it look exactly like this rendering?
