Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to add three more versions to its C-Class lineup starting with the next-generation model, aiming to tackle the BMW 3-Series in the small luxury segment.
Speaking to Automotive News, Mercedes-Benz US CEO Steve Cannon said the C-Class will get convertible, diesel and hybrid versions next year, when the compact executive is redesigned. "We were fighting the 3 series with two arms tied behind our back, and now we will change that," said Cannon, adding that the company is not planning to introduce crossovers to the C-Class lineup.
The BMW 3-Series GT is “an answer to production question that no one is asking for. We would rather not do that,” Cannon added, also saying that the next-generation C-Class station wagon will not be sold in the United States.
The all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class will be unveiled at next year’s Detroit Auto Show in January and it’s scheduled to go on sale in August 2014.
