The next generation of the Audi A4 is expected to arrive in two years’ time and the vehicle is expected to be some sort of a technical revolution, so we’re more than eager to share the first details about it with you.
The next A4, which will use the B9 internal code, will offer a significant boost in efficiency, with this set to be achieved by multiple methods. First of all, the vehicle will be the carmaker’s first model to use its new electric quattro drivetrain.
This means that the vehicle will ditch the heavy differentials used by the current quattro models, and will leave the internal combustion engine to power the front wheels, just like in a non-quattro car, while the rear axle will be motivated by a pair of electric motors that should offer a combined output of 136 hp.
The range of engines will include a beefier version of the 2-liter four-cylinder petrol powerplant delivering 225 hp, a fresh version of the 2.0 TDI oil burner producing 197 hp and others. In addition to that, we will probably get a front-wheel drive plug-in hybrid. This should use the B9 PHEV internal designation and have a powertrain comprised of the aforementioned 225 hp four-pot turbo and a 25 hp electric motor that would be integrated in the transmission housing.
The A4 B9 will also be lighter than the current model, with the vehicle expected to shed about 100 kg (220 lbs), which means that the lightest version will tip the scales at 1,330 kg (2,932 lbs).
