No, it’s not the Opel Zafira you are looking at, nor is it the Vauxhall Zafira, as the Luton-based carmaker is adding the ‘Tourer’ designation at the end of its new product. This is because the old model will continue to be sold in UK showrooms until early 2012.
The Ford S-Max fighter has grown more mature and refined, raising the bar when it comes to flexibility and luxury in the MPV segment. While the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer will continue to use Flex7 seating, which was an innovation for seven-seat integration in the original 1999 Zafira, the system has evolved radically in the new car to offer even greater levels of flexibility, innovation and comfort. Improved material quality and more cabin space further define the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer from its compact MPV Zafira sibling.
The Vauxhall Zafira Tourer will also hold great driver appeal, as a new chassis, using key components from the Insignia, with a longer wheelbase (complementing its 190mm increase in overall length) and wider tracks, will provide better dynamics, while offering occupants more cabin space and ride comfort. Vauxhall's acclaimed FlexRide adaptive damping system - a rarity in this class - will also be available as an option.
So what powers this people carrier? Well, under the bonnet there are three versions of Vauxhall’s 2.0 CDTi diesel, in 108, 128 and 163bhp guises, while buyers after a petrol engine can pick from a turbocharged 1.4 and a naturally aspirated 1.8, both producing 138bhp.
The new Zafira Tourer also features adaptive cruise control with an emergency brake function, a lane departure warning system, a traffic sign recognition function, forward collision alert, adaptive lights, a blind spot alert system, and a park assist system.
Sales will start at the end of the year, with the model to arrive in UK showrooms in early 2012. No pricing information is available at the moment, but expect to see it being pretty similar to that of the Ford S-Max.
