I have been delaying my monthly diecast haul review for so long that it is now on its way to becoming a six-month analysis. To me, slowing down meant buying less than 50 new items overall for several months.
And there's always room for more of them. Well, at least theoretically speaking. Beyond a certain point, you'll need an entire room or even more of them to cope with the hobby. When you can pick up a collectible for $5 or less, racking up 1,000 isn't the most difficult thing to do. I assume one of the reasons Mattel has grown to its current level is its capability to always come up with something new.

Sure, there are several ways to define that last word. Collectors are always thrilled to see a brand-new casting, but recolors will make them almost as happy sometimes. We have seen an influx of new Mercedes-Benz models at Hot Wheels for several years. However, only 38 such castings are available, each with multiple variations. That doesn't even scratch the surface of how many different models the German manufacturer has built over the years.

Thankfully, Matchbox offers a selection of MB vehicles, too. Several of them are Matchbox-exclusive, including the SLR McLaren. Ryu Asada designed the casting many years ago for its 2009 debut. We only saw two variations that year (blue and black), just before the diecast manufacturer lost the license to develop more of them. The SLR McLaren returned in 2017, with two more iterations following suit until 2019.

You can still get the complete collection for relatively cheap, as plenty of them are available on eBay today. The latest Matchbox Collectors was quite unexpected, as there had been no word about the SLR McLaren for four years. It features a glossy black finish with reflective paint accents that may remind you of Tron! The White Line True Grip 2-piece Euro Wheels are a good match for this vehicle, emphasizing its Premium character.

I was happy to see Mattel opted for a city-lights diorama, as you don't need to open the packaging to enjoy the car inside. But I'm struggling to understand why there are no moving parts here. If you charge someone $25 for an item this size, surely that would have been an extra incentive for the deal?

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is the sixth Matchbox Collector available on Mattel Creations this year, following the 1949 Kurtis Sport Car and the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology (EQG), among others. As expected, some people are already trying to use it to turn a profit. I spotted eight listings for it on eBay already, with prices ranging from $40 to $101. Seeing that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," I guess paying that much for it is up to you.
