Last November, we told you how a team of... lawnmower aficionados was getting ready to break the world land speed record for a lawnmower. Today, we are able to confirm the record has been broken. Twice.
In an event which took place at Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire, rider Don Wales took the Kawasaki-engined lawmower to a record breaking speed of 87.833 mph (141.353 km/h), smashing the previous figure of 80.792mph (130.022km/h) set in 2006. Prior to the record setting attempt, the team managed to hit 86.069 mph (138.51 km.h).
''We are very excited and very pleased to have beaten our own record today,'' said Clare Hansley-Boyd, a spokeswoman for the British Project Runningblade team was quoted as saying by telegraph.co.uk.
''We have finished the weekend world record holders and have improved on Saturday's speed so we are happy with that.''
The lawnmower created for the attempt has been built by Countax, a British manufacturer of ride-on lawnmowers. It is powered by a 26 bhp Kawasaki lawnmower engine and runs on road tires.
The goal of the record breaking run is not develop ways to cut the grass on your lawn more quickly. RunningBlade raised funds for the Great Ormond Street Hospital and Wessex Heartbeat.
There's still, however, one unsettled issue: the team hasn't managed to reach 100 mph within a mile.
"The team is very tired after the efforts they have put in over the weekend,'' Hansley-Boyd added. "It is a bit early to say where we will be going from here but I think the 100mph target is something that everyone will be aiming at for the future."
