The Dacia Duster has proven very successful. By taking an old Clio platform and shoehorning it into the shape of an offroader, Renault has managed to sell huge quantities of this budget-oriented crossover.
Even though it's only now being introduced in various markets across the world, the current Duster is an old car, having been launched in 2010. Thus, rumors coming from France indicate that a brand new model is currently under development and should debut at the end of 2016.
The new Duster is expected to increase its length to 4.5 meters from the current 4.31 meters, Caradisiac reports. That would make it about the size of a Peugeot 5008 crossover, meaning parking in tight spaces may prove problematic.
Renault is increasing the size of the next Duster in order to accommodate seven passengers. Two extra seats will be added to the trunk space, though knowing the cut-price nature of this brand, we expect them to be an optional extra, costing less than €800 according to our source.
The platform of the model will undergo changes to make it lighter and stiffer. Renault is also going to offer better engines in both gasoline and diesel flavors, ranging in output from 90 to 130 horsepower. Does that mean the 1.6-liter dCi will finally be offered? Probably, but we don't know for sure yet.
The Duster has helped the Renault brand hugely the past four years. While French car sales were down, Dacia posted double-digit growth almost every year in Europe. Thus, the design of the Duster 2 is being taken very seriously – it needs to be look tough yet approachable. Inspiration will be taken from the latest concept cars, like the Oroch pickup revealed in Brazil. Of course, we could also be surprised by a brand new look, since the Duster is technically their flagship model.
