Some time ago we had the opportunity to test drive the new BMW F12 6 Series coupe, but not with the new diesel engine. Fifth Gear managed to take the diesel for a spin and this is what they had to say.
The 6 Series is now available, in the 640d version, with one of the sportiest diesel engines in the world. The 3-liter, twin turbo engine produces 313 HP and 630 Nm. That's the most powerful BMW diesel engine built until the tri-turbo and it has more torque than the 650i's V8, which taps out at 600 Nm.

Since we're talking about engines, we should also talk about the fuel consumption of the two cars. The 640d does an average of 4.5 l/100 km (51.4 mpg), whilst the 650i goes for about 9l/100 km (26 mpg). That's double!

Even though it has a diesel engine, the car is fast. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and you're accompanied by a ferocious sound all the way. But that is not the point of a car like this.

The 640d is supposed to be driven along quiet, sunny roads. It is supposed to make you and the person next to you feel relaxed, calm and safe. It's not supposed to enter a drag race competition, nor a drifting competition, even though, we're sure it could manage.

Feeling safe it's what it's all about when talking about this 6er. The fact remains that this car is big, and feels like brute force unleashed. Adding the fact that all that torque and power is destined just for you, makes the feeling of driving such a car close to addictive.

Adding the luxurious options and the way it makes you feel to all the other advantages of this car, the 640d will surely go for the top of your list when shopping for 2+2 GTs.
