It's no longer surprising that Audi is reshuffling its lineup, changing the names of certain models and ditching others altogether. We did not know that the upcoming A7 would be a traditional sedan rather than a liftback (Sportback in Audi slang).
However, this design trait is now crystal clear, as our vigilant man with the cam immortalized a prototype of the all-new Audi A7 Sedan for the first time. The model was spied on as it was being driven inside a facility somewhere in Germany, and if you look closely, you will see that a large gap separates the trunk lid from the rear windscreen.

This is the best indication that the model will be a traditional sedan and not a Sportback like the outgoing one. It's a surprising move given that the smaller A4 Sedan will become the A5 Sportback for the new generation and one that will leave the four-ring brand without a challenger to the likes of the BMW 8 Series GC (Gran Coupe). Then again, it was somewhat expected, as Mercedes ditched the rivaling CLS.

You may consider the upcoming A7 Sedan as a direct replacement for the current A6 Sedan. The new model has similar proportions to the six-year-old A6, albeit with what appears to be slightly shorter front and rear overhangs. Let's hope Audi fixed the understeering nature of this model, and you shouldn't worry about the cargo space, as due to clever packaging, it should be superior to that of the current A6.

It has an evolutionary face with a more modern design. The nose is less pointy, the grille a bit smaller and positioned further down to the point where the business four-door vehicle does not have a lower air intake. The new LED headlamps with integrated DRLs have a teardrop shape, and the hood is smaller.

The new LED taillights are visible at the rear from beneath the vinyl stickers, and we wouldn't be surprised to learn that a thin light strip in the middle of the trunk lid links them together. The latter still incorporates the rear license plate and should be home to the usual logos on the sides. The exhaust tips seem real, which would be a nice change over its predecessor (A6 Sedan).

Reports speak of the upcoming Audi A7 using the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture, just like the upcoming A5 and Q5, as well as other future models from the brand's portfolio. The next-gen A7 is expected mostly with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, but the usual gasoline assortment and a full-blown RS model joining the offering.

Audi will probably uncover the upcoming A7 in the coming months or early next year, and it should launch in the United States for the 2025 or 2026 model year.
