Nevada might become the third US state to raise the interstate speed limit from from 70, 75 miles per hour to 85 miles per hour.
A new bill introduced earlier this week by Nevada State Senator Don Gustavson is proposing an 85 mph speed limit on rural highways and interstates, as opposed to the current 70 and 75 mph limit respectively.
"Utah’s statistics show that the fatality rates in those areas with higher speed limits have actually gone down," said Gustavson to LA Times. "They thought that once it went up, the death toll would go with it. But the average speed under the lower limit was 82 before, and now it’s 85."
If the bill becomes law, Nevada will be the third US state to raise speed limit to 85 miles per hour after Texas and Utah.
As expected, this change will cause a lot of debate among citizens in Nevada, with a potential increase of accidents on one side, and reduced travel times on the other.
