Nano in South America Via Fiat-Tata

Tata Motors will be sold in South America but contrary to all the recent media reports, it will arrive in the region through a joint agreement between Fiat and the Indian manufacturer. Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Motors and director of Fiat, admitted for La Stampa that the two companies are collaborating on a number of projects, including building powertrains in India.

"We have various projects, to take the Nano to Latin America together, to share platforms for new cars, we also have projects for Iveco and also for us to sell Ferrari and Maserati," he was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.

Previous media reports indicated that Tata Motors is also planning to sell the Nano in the United States, with the Fiat-Chrysler alliance seen like a possible patch for the car to arrive in the country. The partnership between Tata Motors and Fiat would allow the Indian automaker to do that but, for the time being, there's still no decision on the matter.

Some other rumors hinted that Tata Motors could use the existing Jaguar Land Rover North American dealerships to sell the Nano. However, the JLR representatives promptly denied speculation. "Tata will not use Jaguar Land Rover's distribution network and vice versa," Stuart Schorr, a spokesman for JLR North America, explained.

However, one thing is for sure: Tata Nano will arrive in the United States by 2011. At least this is what Ratan Tata, the owner of Tata Motors, told an audience at Cornell Global Forum on Sustainable Enterprise in New York. How exactly is still an enigma but things should be put straight soon as the company is getting closer to the US launch.
