Earlier today, we brought you the latest spyshots of the next convertible from BMW. Rumor has it that both the 3-Series coupe and convertible will be know as the 4-Series with the arrival of the next generation, based on the F30 platform.
The reports really don’t have a firm base, but it’s clear that BMW officials are seriously considering the move. Why this would create some differentiation between the four-doors and the two doors, we thing BMW could have introduced a completely different car as the 4er. However, there’s no mistaking the advantages of moving the 1-Series models to the 2-Series name.
You can never completely associate the impractical hatchback with that sleek 1M Coupe. The move would leave the door open for BMW to make a smaller official M car. Last year, the name “M2” was officially trademarked in Germany and America, and rumor has it they are working on a light, powerful car with lots of carbon fiber.
BMW is also considering adding xDrive to the new 2-Series models as an option. The move is already semi-official in the case of the upcoming 135i created by M Performance.
Car Magazine even goes as far as to state the outputs of the engines for the car. The 2.0-liter petrol will be available with either 150 or 218 horsepower, while the diesel option will have 214 hp.
