If you want a fully custom hot hatch right now, you can just buy a used Golf GTI and find a million parts online. You'll see dozens of engine bolt-ons, interior goodies, and even some widebody kits. However, the Peugeot 308 GTi wasn't that lucky.
We're sure Peugeot made some killer hot hatchbacks in the past, but only the try-hard classic car fans know what they are. The 307 series was so bad that if we type it into a search engine, Google will just assume we confused it for the 308. That said, the French company did something really interesting here, getting its 1.6-liter turbo engine to produce 270 HP, which made it the most power-dense unit of its kind at the time.
By using something smaller, they could keep weight down, so the French GTi is several passengers lighter than its German rivals. But nothing is shared with other cars, so tuning is more difficult. It also doesn't have a DSG gearbox or a million drive modes.
The only notable name in Peugeot tuning is Musketier, but we found something a lot more creative. Check out the "BPS 308," a one-off from France. This is an inky-black project that deletes all the trim, tints all the windows and sucks in all the light. On top of that, you have a unique body kit which consists of a huge racing chin spoiler with adjustment struts, fender flares, and a rear diffuser. But it's the trunk wing that dominates this Peugeot, probably custom-made using a C&C machine.
Stage 1 tuning was also used to improve the aural experience and extract 300 HP plus 430 Nm from the engine. The interior wasn't left out either. It features a custom carbon fiber steering wheel with shift lights over the top. We think it's a one-off, but nothing here is easy to comprehend.
