Suzuki has just about packed its bags and left the US, with many people asking if Mitsubishi should follow in the near future. The once mighty Japanese carmaker only sells about 50,000 cars a year in America, and its hope seems to be misplaced in a small car and an ugly new SUV.
Starting this fall, an affordable subcompact will become available in the US. It's called the Mirage and it's built in Asia. Europe will also receive the same car later this year, though unexpectedly it will arrive under a different name.
The company announced it will actually be known as the Space Star, a name borrowed from a small van sold up until a few years ago.
The new Space Star will be sold exclusively with 1.0-liter with 71 HP and 1.2-liter with 80 HP petrol engines. Both models are expected to do about 4 liters /100 km on the combined cycle and emit under 100 grams of CO2. Stadard kit will include six airbags, ABS+ESP and hill start assist for the CVT models.
The base model will reportedly only weigh 845 kilograms, though with a boot capacity of only 235 liters it might not be the most practical of superminis.
