Last year MINI decided to revive the Mini Van, a version of the original Mini built from 1960 through 1982, by introducing the MINI Clubvan at the Geneva Motor Show. The British hoped the van would become popular in the US, one of MINI’s strongest markets... but they were wrong. Very, very wrong...
Because the van version of the MINI Clubman failed big time with only 50 units delivered, not enough for the company to keep selling a commercial vehicle subjected to the infamous “Chicken Tax”. On the other hand, MINI representatives claim Clubvan sales “have been strong in other markets worldwide, many of which benefit from tax advantages” for small commercial vehicles, which means the automaker won’t drop the model altogether.
In the meantime, the 50-unit run of the US-spec MINI Clubvan could enable the small van to become quite a sought after vehicle in the future.
