With the financial crisis over and money rolling in from successful mass market projects such as the CLA compact sedan, Mercedes is free to pursue making dream cars unlike anything that has ever been seen before.
Our spies in Germany have spotted this fresh prototype of the S-Class Convertible, the next member of a family that's grown far beyond its original proportions. Based on the recently launched S-Class Coupe, one of the biggest four-seater convertibles ever made will soon roll out of a German factory.
Stretching over 5 meters in length, the S-Cabrio will be based on the W222 of the revolutionary S-Class limo and will come with many of the same luxury amenities. Standard kit will include Active Parking Assist with a reversing camera, a 12.3-inch TFT display, Magic Vision Control and the latest Command infotainment system.
Thanks to the optional Magic Body Control system, the S-Cabrio will be able to glide along the road without body roll like a magic carpet. The cabin will be one of the most spacious and quietest of any convertible, perfect for listening to the Burmester sound system.
At least three engines will be available on the car, all of them twin turbocharged. The base S 500 Cabriolet will pack 455 hp and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) from a 4.7-liter V8 and should be available with all-wheel drive in LHD markets. The S 63 AMG Cabrio model will pack 585 hp and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) from a 5.5-liter V8 and should be joined by an even more extreme S 65 AMG with 630 hp and 1000 Nm (737 lb-ft) provided by a 6-liter V12.
Look for the official debut of the A222 S-Class Cabriolet at next year's Frankfurt Motor Show, or just before that in order to take advantage of the convertible craze during the summer of 2015.
