Remember the CLK? Now that was a good Mercedes 2-door, especially as an AMG. The E-Class replacement has arguably been less successful, which is unlikely to change after the mid-life facelift of the second generation.
The rise of SUVs is partly to blame, but Mercedes also held the E-Class Coupe and Convertible back too much in order to leave room for things like the S-Class and AMG GT.
Here we have the latest spy video of the E-Class Cabrio facelift, which might debut around this time next year. So while your California estate agent is selling as many properties as he can, the German engineers are looking to develop his or her next car. We may be boxing the car into a specific stereotype, but you have to admit that it's true: only a special kind of person wants this car.
And we believe customers are so few and far between that Mercedes will stop making it in about four more years, just like they did with the SLK/SLC roadster. In the meantime, a facelift is what we get, one which will share its design features with the other members of the E-Class family.
As the Stuttgart spy video shows, the E-Cabrio has revised headlights, narrower and with a new LED brow over the top, a bit like the CLA and CLS. This is matched to a new grille design that's best described as "upside down."
Technology-wise, this car could share some stuff with the new S-Class flagship model, but also the GLE-Class SUV. Inside, we want to see the MBUX being implemented, while a few of the engines will have more power. For example, the E300 will be replaced by the E350 with about 270 Hp instead of the current 255 HP. Unfortunately, it still won't have a true AMG version, stopping at the lackluster E53 with its heavy hybrid combo.
