The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a preliminary investigation into 2008 and 2009 model year Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedans after receiving several complaints regarding the vehicle’s taillights and turn signals.
According to The Detroit News, about 218,000 C-Class sedans are being investigated after drivers reported “a burning smell or melting of electrical parts”, as well as “dimming or failing” brake lights or turn signals. Although one owner reported small flames coming from the rear lamp connector, the NHTSA claims no injuries have been reported related to this issue.
The agency will investigate the problem further to see if the problem is widespread enough to justify a recall.
2008 and 2009 were the first model years for the third-generation C-Class (W204), which is the best-selling entry-level luxury car in Canada and the United States.
