Mercedes-Benz Steals Luxury Sales Crown from BMW in 2013

In 2012 and 2011, BMW claimed the number one spot in the luxury sales in the US, keeping Mercedes-Benz and Audi at bay with its impressive numbers. Last year (that’s already 2013, mind you), things didn’t go so well though.
Despite posting record-breaking sales, BMW was outshone by their arch-rivals from Stuttgart, that managed to sell even more cars. The key role of this whole equation belonged to the brand new, cheap, FWD CLA-Class that helped Mercedes reach a total of 312,534 units sold in 2013. On the other hand, BMW came really close with 309,280 units.

It was a really close call though, as BMW sold big in December, nearly halving the sales of its rival during the last 4 weeks of the year. However, big numbers reported beforehand thanks to the new E-Class and S-Class proved to be a bit too much for the Bavarians to compensate.

PS: everybody criticizes BMW for going front-wheel-drive and claims that the company will soon be in danger because of this new approach. Meanwhile, Mercedes, a company that was also renowned for making RWD vehicles, is posting huge sales with just that kind of vehicles. Yeah, apparently, everybody knows what’s best for BMW, just not the company itself.
