We remember the time when long wheelbase versions of the Mercedes S-Class looked large. Not so in the present - they’ve conceived the S-Class as an elongated platform from the very beginning with the new model, so it looks as natural as possible. The US gets the only version that matters, the elongated one and when it comes to the AMG, Americans can only have it with all-wheel drive. Again, not a problem, the S63 AMG 4Matic we drove is the version to have anyway.
The AMG bodykit does so much more than just make this sedan look a bit more capable. With its edgy, masculine styling cues, it brings back some of the Mercedes elegance of the Golden Age. If you ask us, this is the way any S-Class should look like.
The AMG treatment doesn’t change much inside the car, but the fresh elements do quite a lot, especially for the driver. The AMG dashboard instruments are our favorite. With their three-dimensional design, they manage to take away a part of the digital dashboard’s blandness.
Many wonder why you’d want to have carbon fiber pieces hidden in your trunk. Well, AMG has two answers. First of all... because you can. Secondly, they’ve used a carbon fiber spare wheel recess as part of a weight-saving program that sees the new model shed 220 lbs (100 kg) compared to its predecessor. As for the rest of the luggage compartment, you can see this in the Full HD Photo Gallery of our Mercedes S63 AMG 4Matic test drive.
