Alright, so Mercedes-Benz won pretty much every motorsport competition it entered this year: Formula One, Formula Three, DTM or the ADAC GT Masters. It’s safe to say, then, that everyone at Mercedes-Benz is ecstatic.
A little too ecstatic, actually, if we’re to judge by this latest celebratory clip released just a day ago. It’s Tron meets Spectrum ZX with a touch of Japanese manga and a huge dose of WTF. Yes, that describes it perfectly.
If you ever wanted to see a Formula One driver - no, two Formula One drivers bopping their heads to the rhythm of electronic music, you’re in the right place. This bizarre video has flying Formula One cars and a Lewis Hamilton acting as a DJ with robotic hands. We’re not making it sound weird, it actually is.
And then there’s that tunnel that turns everything into 8-bit graphics, summoning memories of the great Lotus Challenge video game series launched in 1990, only this time it’s played with Mercedes-AMG models. Which would be fine with us.
But then the tunnel’s over, and we’re back to reality. Well, sort of. The cars look normal, but everything else doesn’t. It’s a Tron-like universe but with a very telling recognizable element: the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart where the upcoming Stars & Cars event will take place on December 12.
There’s just so much to take in from this clip that you actually begin to wonder whether Mercedes-Benz had been purchased by a Japanese company and this is their way of telling us. The connections with the Mercedes-Benz values we’re used to are close to none, but it’s easy to get carried away after such a season. And, besides, the youngsters are probably loving it.
And then there are the electronic donuts the two Formula One cars perform. That might actually catch on.
