Rumor has it German automaker Mercedes-Benz is working its way into a new niche by developing a coupe version of the GL full-size SUV.
According to Autobild, the new GLC will go into production in 2016 as a five-door crossover SUV that will feature a sloping roof similar to that of the BMW X6. But the GLC won’t rival the X6 - a MLC will take care of that. The Germans claim the new GL Coupe is aimed at the yet unconfirmed BMW X7 and Audi A9.
“For Mercedes, the project makes sense,” says Autobild, adding that the GLC could become a great success in China and the United States, but we suggest you hang on to that grain of salt for the time being.
If this GLC becomes more than a rumor, it will be built at the company’s Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama, US, alongside the MLC, which will hit the market in 2015. The vehicle could be powered by an assortment of gasoline and diesel engines, including a V8, mated to the company’s new nine-speed automatic transmission.
