Mercedes-Benz Australia has recently announced the start of the pre-order procedures for the new open-top CLE model, and the initial 300 4Matic Cabriolet version will go on sale before long.
After the launch of the Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe, which supplants the coupe options from the former C-Class and E-Class model ranges, the family grows larger in the Land Down Under with the arrival of the cabriolet version. However, don't expect the new CLE 300 4Matic Cabriolet to sell cheap because the "pleasantly spacious new way to enjoy open-top driving" costs no less than AUD 135,900.
That translates to no less than $90,334, which is almost one-and-a-half times the MSRP of the same model in America – in the United States, the CLE 300 starts from $64,300, and even the CLE 450 4Matic Cabriolet starts lower at $73,850! Also, keep in mind this Australian list price is the manufacturer-recommended quotation with GST and any LCT "but excludes all on-road costs" such as registration fees, stamp duty, CTP, and others.
Equipped with features designed to "maximize comfort and convenience for up to four occupants," the CLE 300 Cabriolet has Aircap, Airscarf, an electrically-powered soft top that can be stowed or deployed in 20 seconds at up to 60 kph (37 mph), 60:40 split-folding rear seats to extend the boot capacity, Easy Entry access, the latest MBUX generation on an 11.9-inch portrait center screen with 15 to 40 degrees electric tilting function, and leather seats with a "special coating to reflect the sun's near-infrared rays during journeys when the soft-top is open."
Larger than the outgoing C-Class Cabriolet, the new CLE Cabriolet has two-part LED lights, a standard AMG Line exterior, and a Night Package. At the same time, a turbo four-pot provides power with mild hybrid technology. The output is 255 hp and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, plus a boost of 17 kW and 205 Nm from the 48V mild hybrid system, and the CLE 300 sprints to 100 kph (62 mph) in 6.6 seconds.
There is also a standard sports suspension, an AMG Line interior, and a Burmester 3D surround sound system with 17 speakers; the MBUX multimedia system includes the Navigation Premium package with augmented reality, plus head-up display, heated front seats with memory function, wireless charging and smartphone integration, dual-zone climate control, and Active Parking Assist with a 360-degree camera.
Last but not least, there is also a standard Digital Light package that includes "a projection function, plus two daytime running light ellipses and blue illumination of the headlight base." The CLE 300 comes standard with 19-inch AMG alloy wheels, and the standard safety setup includes perks like ten airbags, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Brake Assist, Blindspot Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Distronic with active cruise control, and the Pre-Safe accident preparation system.
