Mazda has announced it will recall certain examples of the 2009-2010 Mazda6 in the USA.
The Japanese automaker said that the service action targets approximately 41,918 units of its midsize sedan. According to Mazda, the recall targets the airbag control unit’s power supply, which could fail because of an insufficient protective coating.
The automaker has explained that moisture could enter the control unit and cause it to malfunction. If the airbag control unit fails, the airbag warning light will be lit in the gauge cluster, and the airbags themselves will be prevented from deploying in the case of an accident.
This situation increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash, so Mazda has decided to replace the ACU. Like every other recall, the replacement is free for all owners of the affected vehicles. The Japanese automaker will send notifications to all known owners beginning October 3, 2016.
Unfortunately, remedy parts are not currently available, so a second notice will be directed to the owners of the 41,918 affected vehicles when those components are available.
The recall filing shows that the affected vehicles were manufactured between February 4, 2008, and December 3, 2009. As Mazda already explained, the issue was discovered over time, and it occurred because of a potentially improper application of the protective coating that covers the airbag control unit. For the moment, no accidents, injuries, or fatalities were reported as being related to the problem.
